Giving Sight - Giving Life is an initiative to provide free eye care services to people who have difficulties to access them. Our activates are governed by Giving Sight-Giving Life Steering Committee comprised of kind hearted, experienced and devoted personnel.

Giving Sight is Giving Life ! Giving sight to someone who is blind will change his or her whole life in a good way.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide free eye care services to those who are economically deprived and geographically marginalized by reaching the unreached.

Our objectives

To provide comprehensive eye care services free to all those who cannot afford for it by means of,

* Reaching the un-reached by conducting clinics in the periphery
* Serving the un-served by conducting free eye clinic KCECC in Maharagama
* Screening school children and providing free spectacles
* Conducting free cataract operations for those who are blind and poor

Founder and Co-Chairperson of Karuna Trust. Patron of the Giving Sight Giving Life project committee. He is a successful businessman, retired from business and dedicated his entire life on charitable activities. Fifteen years ago, on his 70th birthday, he initiated a charity investing rupees 1.5 m and name it Karuna Trust. Karuna Trust has been incorporated as a duly constitute Trust under the laws of Sri Lanka. It is registered at the Ministry of Social Services of Sri Lanka as a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) with the registration No. L28501. By now there is a savings of rupees 100 m and this entire sum has been donated by their family business. Karuna Community Eye Care Centre at Maharagama is 100% funded from the interes of this fund.

The Co-chairperson of Karuna Trust is the Chairperson of Giving Sight Giving Life project. She is a holder of Bachelor of Arts (Special Degree) in Geography (First Class Honors) from the University of Sri Jayawardanapura, Sri Lanka and Masters in Public Administration from Carlton University, Canada. During her 33 service period in Public Service she was able to consecutively hold the office of the Director General in three leading Department under the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Department of Management Services, Department of National Budget and Sri Lanka Custom. Then she was promoted as the Secretary to the Ministry of Plantation Industries in Sri Lanka and later appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Women's Affairs & Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development respectively. She holds two records as the first lady Director General of Customs in the history of 206 years of Sri Lanka Customs and first lady Secretary to the Ministry of Health. Presently she is the chairperson of Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission.

Secretary. (Dip.Opt SLOA/MSLOA) is the optometrist and in-charge of the optical dispensing unit at KCECC. She is a DIRECTOR OF Sri Lanka Optometric Association and a MEMBER OF WORLD COUNCIL OF OPTOMETRY and MEMBER OF CCOO. She is a successful businesswoman and popular social worker conducting many outreach eye care programmes to facilitate people in far and remote areas of the country.

Committee Member is a Community Ophthalmologist attached to the Ministry of Health-Suwasiripaya. He possesses a masters degree from The PICO, University of Peshawar affiliated to the International Centre for Eye Health UK. He was the National Coordinator of the Vision 2020 National Programme for Prevention of Blindness from 2007 to 2017. He is the country chair for the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness IAPB for the second term since 2016. He received Global Eye Health Leader Award in 2014 for his achievements and dedication in the filed of community eye health in Sri Lanka. He is a member of the Expert Group for the South East Asia on Eye Health. Dr Asela pioneered to launch Karuna Community Eye Care Centre and volunteers daily to work in it.

Dr Nalin Goonasinghe

is a practicing Clinical Ophthalmologist since year 2000 with a special interest in Preventive Ophthalmology. He obtained a MSc Community Eye Heath from the University College London at the International Center for Eye Health and Moorefield Hospital Institute of Ophthalmology in 1999. He works hard in conducting programs in rural communities in Sri Lanka to eliminate the Preventable causes of Blindness. These programs have been sponsored by many local and International organizations committed to Prevention of Blindness. He is a founder member of the Sri Lanka Association of Community Ophthalmologist ( SLACO ) formed in 2015 and is presently the Hon. Secretary of SLACO

is a Consultant in Project Management cum a development practitioner. A former United Nations Volunteer in Primary Health Care in the Philippines, he counts over 30 years experience in national positions of international NGOs including Redd Barna (Save the Children Norway), US Peace Corps, Healpage, Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG), Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), Oxfam GB, BasicNeeds and Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM).
